Agroforestry

AgroForesty is the permaculture practice of harmoniously incorporating trees.

Permaculture

In permaculture, unlike monocultures, diverse crops are planted together harmoniously, promoting sustainability. This method naturally regenerates soil without the need for synthetic fertilizers or pesticides, with plants working symbiotically to provide shade, habitats, water retention, pest control, and nutrient absorption.

Peace Corps Zambia | Agroforestry

A mission to improve the standard of living of food insecure small holder farmers while simultaneously improving the environment.

This is achieved through revenue generating activities that align with forest conservation and tree planting.

My Garden

I began the development of my garden day 1 of moving into my new home.

The garden initially consisted of several rows of inter cropping flowers, vegetables, and herbs in my front yard.

My second year, the garden transitioned to a potato patch irrigated by the village rain run-off.

Water Capture Systems

Swales on Contour

Image 3

Deep Basins

Digging water capture structures can vastly improve the success of reforestation initiatives and prevent erosion.

Life needs water, so best to grab it when we can.

Basins

Field Basins

Image 3

Desert Basins

Basins are an effective approach for topologies that are flat or in which the gradient is difficult to assess. Digging holes or basins is a simple method for capturing rain locally and vastly improves the growth of neighboring trees.

Flat Terrace

Terrace farming is a wonderful land managment technique for steep hills and a very impressive signature of humanity. Building terraces is a labor intensive marvel.

Swales

Swales

Swales are a good easy solution for capturing run off. Swales are more difficult to implement than basins due to the requirement of measuring the contour of the field.

Agroforestry Systems

AgroForestry Systems vary depending on the conditions of the biome. Various systems will make use of appropriate tree species. Trees can improve the conditions and sustainability of a farm.
